New Defender

new def 1.jpg

This is my new Defender/Stargate controller

I have been building controllers for many years my original Defender controller always sold  well and was very well received but for me and a lot of other people it was to small.

I always wanted to build a larger close to full arcade size version but could never find a case large enough. After a few months of trying I had the idea to build this case from 3mm  black acrylic Perspex.

The size of the case is not quite full size but very close as all the fire buttons and joystick are in their correct positions to the original layout with the small exception of the 1 player and 2 player buttons that are slightly closer together.

The dimensions of the case are 490mm long by 210mm wide by 130mm high (height includes Joystick and rubber feet )

Parts Used.

Structure

The plastic case is made from 3mm glossy Black acrylic Perspex.

Inside the the top of the case is a 12 mm mdf wooden sheet making the structure of the controller very strong and solid to play on.

Inside the case their are 4 solid wooden legs that attach the inner 12 mm mdf sheet to a 6 mm plywood base. Their are 4 rubber feet screwed to the base to stop it slipping on the desk.

The sticker uses the same button layout as the original arcade with the exception of player 1 and 2 buttons being slightly closer together.

*Important

The Defender control panel sticker is in 2 pieces and joined in the middle.

The join is visible but does in my opinion look fine.

But this may not be to everyone's taste.

Please see photo below.

It was done this way to save money in the production of the controller.

This way I could use my own a4 printer to print out the 2 sides.

The sticker is high quality self adhesive glossy vinyl and is laminated so it doesn't  wear.

The fire buttons are  silent Ultimarc gold leaf buttons

The 2 way Joystick is my own design. it uses a solid steel shaft that rotates back and forth on 2 bearings. it activates 2 of the Ultimarc silent gold leaf microswitches.

The 2 way stick uses a 30mm (The original was 31mm) ball top which is much better for playing Defender than the usual 35mm Ball tops

The encoder is a traditional zero delay encoder. It works on most platforms including a raspberry pi. I only use mine on a windows PC so I couldn't offer any help regarding other

platforms.
